Dr. Lee J. M. Seymour is an assistant professor in Political Science at the University of Amsterdam's Transnational Configurations, Conflict and Governance program.
He studied political science at Northwestern University, Sciences Po Paris, Dalhousie University and the University of British Columbia. Before joining UvA, he was a research fellow at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik in Berlin, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, and an assistant professor at Leiden University.
His interests comprise three related strands of research and teaching. The first focuses on civil wars, examining patterns of fragmentation and cohesion in armed groups. He is currently completing a project funded by a NWO VENI research grant on the internal politics of armed groups in Sudan and Somalia. A second set of interests concern the politics of self-determination and separatism. He is currently writing a book manuscript, Pathways to Secession, comparing the outcomes of recent armed separatist conflicts, with particular attention to the Horn of Africa, the Balkans, and the Caucasus. Finally, a new project examines dimensions of truth and truthfulness in international diplomacy, including truth-telling, lying, hypocrisy and BSing.
His work has appeared in the Journal of Conflict Resolution, Perspectives on Politics and the European Journal of International Relations.
