Richard van der Wurff (PhD) is director of the College of Social Sciences (CSS) at the University of Amsterdam. The College offers bachelor programmes in Sociology, Political Science, Cultural Anthropology, Social Geography and Planning, and General Social Sciences.

He is Member of the University Expert on Education and ICT, and chairs the University working group that is in charge of selecting the new Electronic Learning Environment (see www.uva.nl/TEL).

Before becoming director of CSS, he was senior lecturer at the College and Graduate School of Communication and researcher at The Amsterdam School of Communications Research ASCoR of the University of Amsterdam.

His main research interest is the diversity and quality of news, both off- and online. Current projects focus on the diversity of climate change news in different European countries, and the impact of news quality on news users' understanding of different political viewpoints and debates. Previous work investigated the impact of competition on the diversity of television programmes and trade information, the impact of the internet on news media, and the desirability of journalistic codes of conduct.

He taught both first-year and master courses (Introduction to Communication Science, Media Landscape of the Netherlands, Journalism and the Media). He was member of the Examination Committee and Test Quality Policy coordinator.

He also worked as a visiting scholar for the Technology Forecasting Unit of the European Commission, coordinated a European COST research network on the impact of the internet on newspapers, conducted studies for the Media Ombudsman Foundation, the Dutch Press Fund, and the Dutch Publishers Association, and served as advisor to the Dutch Media Authority.
