Academic Profile and Research Interests

My main research interests lie in the relationship between narrative and cultures of science. I am interested in how new technologies are received and which new ideas are formed as the result of scientific discovery. I am also interested in how narrative technologies shape storytelling. I write about dystopian fiction, science fiction, computer games and serials.

In December 2012 I successfully defended my PhD project entitled A History of Our Connected Future: Dystopia, Telecommunication Technology and Space. It closely analyzes the structures of dystopian science fiction which employ telecommunication networks as a motif, and addresses both the frequency with which dystopia and telecommunication technology co-occur, and the epistemological changes that this might indicate. This project was supervised by the thesis director, Dr. J. Goggin (http://home.medewerker.uva.nl/j.goggin), and the official promotor, Prof. C.P. Lindner (http://home.medewerker.uva.nl/c.p.lindner).
