Dhr. dr. Federico Gobbo (1974) bestudeert de interactie tussen spontane en bewuste factoren in de taalontwikkeling. Hij is daarbij specifiek geïnteresseerd in empirisch onderzoek naar sociolinguïstieke aspecten van Esperanto, zoals de opkomst van onderscheidende taalkenmerken bij de spraakgewoontes van jeugd uit verschillende landen. Als een plantaal die meer dan een eeuw gebruikt wordt, biedt Esperanto een unieke context voor onderzoek naar centripetale (gestandaardiseerde) en centrifugale (afwisselende) tendensen in het ‘leven’ van een taal.
Gobbo doet onderzoek op het snijvlak van informatica, met de nadruk op formele talen, en de geschiedenis en filosofie van taalontwerp en -planning. Technologie heeft een grote invloed gehad op het moderne denken over taal, en op het gebruik van talen bij internationale communicatie. Met zijn onderzoek probeert Gobbo licht te werpen op deze onderwerpen.
Gobbo doceert interlinguïstiek en Esperanto aan de Universiteit van Turijn (Italië). Hij gaf colleges over de geschiedenis en filosofie van (het werken met) computers aan de Universiteit van Nanjing (China). Gobbo is book review editor van het vaktijdschrift Language Problems and Language Planning, deed bijdragen aan vele internationale conferenties over taalwetenschap, filosofie en informatica, en publiceerde artikelen in bladen als Journal of Universal Language, Philosophy & Technology en International Journal of Mind, Brain & Cognition.
