I have been teaching at the University of Amsterdam since 2003, usually the master's course "The Holocaust" and the bachelor's lecture course "Massamoord en maatschappij" (Mass Murder and Society). For several years, I coordinated the master's track in Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
I am Senior Researcher at the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies (Herengracht 380, 1016CJ Amsterdam; http://www.niod.nl ), which is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Until 2010, I worked at the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam, which that year merged with the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (which used to be abbreviated in Dutch as NIOD).
I was the J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Senior Scholar-in-Residence at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. for 2010-2011, researching the Holocaust of the Jews of Kiev and the postwar history of the killing site, Babi Yar.
I received a Ph.D. in history from the University of Toronto in Canada (1998), an M.A. in Regional Studies (Soviet Union Program) from Harvard University (1992), and two Doctorandus degrees (M.A. equivalent) in Russian studies and history from the University of Amsterdam (1989).
  
In 2008 a paperback edition of my revised and expanded doctoral dissertation appeared, Harvest of Despair: Life and Death in Ukraine under Nazi Rule (Harvard University Press, 2004). An authorized Ukrainian translation by Taras Tsymbal was published by Krytyka Publishers in 2011, and it was shortlisted as Ukrainian Book of the Year 2011, category: History. 

In 2012 appeared Motherland in Danger: Soviet Propaganda during World War II ( Harvard University Press), a study largely funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. A  round table and discussion to mark the occasion is available for viewing as "War and the Holocaust in the Soviet Media" on NIOD's YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2244096B075D4DFE

Aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam doceer ik sinds 2003, meestal een mastercollege over de Holocaust en een bachelorcollege genaamd "Massamoord en maatschappij." Ik was ook gedurende een aantal jaren de coördinator van het mastertraject Holocaust- en Genocidestudies.

Tot 2010 werkte ik bij het Centrum voor Holocaust- en Genocidestudies, dat in dat jaarsamenging met het Nederlands Instituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie.
In het studiejaar 2010-2011 was ik op verlof als de J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Senior Scholar-in-Residence aan het Centerfor Advanced Holocaust Studies van het United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. Ik onderzocht daar de Holocaust van de joden van Kiev en de naoorlogse geschiedenis van de plek waar zij werden vermoord, Babi Jar.
Ik studeerde geschiedenis en Ruslandkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (1983 - 1989) en vervolgens Soviet Studies aan Harvard University (1990 - 1992). Ik promoveerde als historicus aan de Universiteit van Toronto in Canada (1998).

In 2008 verscheen een paperback van mijn herziene en uitgebreide dissertatie, Harvest of Despair: Life and Death in Ukraine under Nazi Rule (Harvard University Press, 2004). Een geautoriseerde Oekraïense vertaling door Taras Tsymbal verscheen in 2011 bij Krytyka Publishers; het stond op de shortlist  als Oekraïens Boek van het Jaar 2011, categorie Geschiedenis.
  
In het kader van een tentoonstelling over de Holocaust in Oekraïne verscheen in 2009 het boekje De onbekende massagraven van Oekraïne , gepubliceerd door het Nationaal Monument Kamp Vught. De NOS interviewde mij over deze tentoonstelling. In 2012 verscheen bij Harvard University Press Motherland in Danger: Soviet Propaganda during World War II . Het onderzoek voor dit boek werd grotendeels gefinancieerd door de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek.
