About Mark Boukes

Dr. Mark Boukes is a postdoctoral researcher at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research part of the University of Amsterdam. He is working on a project that investigates the role of the media for the economic perceptions and political opinions people hold in current, turbulent times of economic crisis.

For his PhD, which he defended in January 2015, he worked on the project "It's fun! But is it effective? The consequences of new news shows" that ran from September 2011 to August 2014. This research focused on new news genres and infotainment, in particular soft news (e.g., human interest framing), opinionated news (e.g., PowNews) and political satire (e.g., LuckyTV), and how watching these kinds of television programs might have effects on political attitudes. Most studies for this project employed experiments.

Over the years, he also gained experience with other scientific methods, such as content analysis and surveys. Moreover, he is very interested in advancing statistical analyses and has further developed and applied state-of-the-art analytical techniques as is evidenced by his scientific publications.
