Current and past research activities

Michaël Deinema is a postdoctoral researcher in the research project "Towards a Comparative Sociology of Beauty", and is responsible for the subproject "Consuming Beauty".  His reception research in the Netherlands, the UK, France, Italy, Poland and Turkey,  explores and compares consumer perceptions of beauty industry imagery as well as the notions of human beauty held by various fractions of the general public  in these countries. His research, combines quantitativeanalyses of survey data with ethnographic interview-based research, and aims to contribute to a sociological understanding of the (social and spatial) dynamics of cultural transnationalization processes.
As a PhD candidate in Economic Geography at the University of Amsterdam, he focused on the long-term spatial and institutional development of cultural industries in the Netherlands in the context of a collaborative project entitled "Places and their Culture: The Evolution of Dutch Cultural Industries from an International Perspective, 1600-2010." He will defend his PhD thesis towards the end of 2011. Before starting his PhD track he studied Social and Economic History.
