Amineh studied Political Science and International Relations at the University of Amsterdam , where he also obtained his PhD in 1998.

Research Interests

Amineh's researches are focused on comparative studies on politics of development, politicized religion, authoritarianism and democratization, geopolitics, energy security [both conventional energy and alternative energy resources] with focus on the Middle East, Central-, and East Asia and the European Union.

New Joint Research Project (2013-2017)

Granted Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) for the joint Research Programme – Transnationalization of Chinese Oil Industry – between the Institute of West Asia and African Studies, Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and Energy Programme Asia, International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) for a period of 3 years from January 2013 till January 2017.

This joint comparative research project will analyse China’s increasing involvement with governments, local institutions and local stakeholders in the energy sectors of a number of resource-rich countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America (notably Sudan, Ghana, Saudi-Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Venezuela, and Brazil).

The core team of eleven principal researchers will present individual studies on various aspects and different countries. This interdisciplinary research project will be managed by Dr. M.P. Amineh (The Energy Programme Asia –EPA- IIAS/UvA) and Prof. Yang Guang (Institute of West Asian and African Studies - CASS) in cooperation with the following Chinese/CASS and Dutch research centres and universities: the Institute of Industrial Economy-CASS (IIE), the Institute of Latin American Studies-CASS (ILAS), the Institute of Russian, East European & Central Asian Studies-CASS (IREECAS), the Centre for Latin American Studies/CEDLA, Department of Politics and Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology of the University of Amsterdam, the Institute for Environmental Studies of VU Free University Amsterdam, the International Institute for Asian Studies, and Leiden University.

Research programme Domestic and Geopolitical Challenges to Energy Security for China and the EU

From 2007 till September 2011 he was director of the joint research programme titeld `Domestic and Geopolitical Challenges to Energy Security for China and the EU'. The joint research programme was a collaboration between Energy Programme Asia-International Institute for Asian Studies and Institute of Asian and African Studies-Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), the Institute of Industrial Economy-CASS, the Institute of Latin American Studies-CASS and, the Institute of Russian , East European & Central Asian Studies-CASS.

The research project was financed by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Social Sciences (KNAW), by Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and IIAS.

Teaching

Amineh is involved in various teaching activities at the International School for Humanities and Social Sciences (ISHSS) and Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS), Amsterdam School of International Relations (ASIR) of the Universityof Amsterdam (UvA)and Webster University , Leiden.
