De behandeling van kanker, het opsporen van ziektes bij ongeboren kinderen, de speurtocht naar een vaccin tegen aids: het werkterrein van de bio-medische wetenschapper bevindt zich in de frontlinie van de medische wetenschap. Als specialist in de moleculaire basis van leven zijn de onderzoeksresultaten vaak van levensreddende betekenis . Ook kun je met deze studie als expert of hoofd van het diagnostische laboratorium van ziekenhuizen gaan werken. Aansluiting is er voor de hele goede en gemotiveerde student op selectieve research masterprogramma's Biomedical Sciences, de arts-onderzoekers masters AKO (Maastricht) en SUMMA (Utrecht) alsmede het Geneeskunde masters programa met onderzoekersprofiel van VUMC en de zij-instroom van de masters Geneeskunde van het AMC. Deze opleiding wordt aan de UvA gezamenlijk gedragen door de bètafaculteit en het AMC.
Numerus fixus & Geneeskunde. Bio-medische wetenschappen aan de UvA staat voor kwaliteit op theoretisch en praktischvlak. Vanuit die insteek hebben we vanaf 2011 gekozen voor een numerusfixus die inmiddels landelijk is. Onze numerus fixus staat op 200. Eerste keus inschrijvers met een gemiddeld eindexamencijfer van 8 of hoger hebben daarbij altijd een plek. Alle vroege inschrijvers, i.e. zij die zich per 15 mei hebben aangemeld, hebben BIJNA ZEKER een plaats. Wees er dus snel bij! Hieronder staat een korte introductie op datgene wat op de bachelordag van a.s. zaterdag 16 november 2013 aan bod komt en twee highlight (thema)colleges van de opleiding.

Deze links geven highlight colleges over pathogene schimmels (prof. Brul), waarin microbiologie en gastheer-microbe interacties centraal staan, en over aangeboren en verworven metabole ziekten (prof. Aerts) zoals ze op het AMC worden bestudeerd. De colleges zijn er twee uit een reeks en geven een prachtige illustratie hoe de fundamentele inzichten in de biologie van het menselijk lichaam en microorganismen essentieel zijn om tot goede therapie van ziekten en het, met gerichte interventies, behouden van gezondheid te komen.
