About:

Marguerite van den Berg is assistant professor (universitair docent) of sociology at the University of Amsterdam. She defended her dissertation "Mothering the Post-Industrial City- Family and Gender in Urban Re-Generation" October 1 2013 (UvA, the Netherlands). For this dissertation, she researched parenting guidance policy practices in Rotterdam, the Netherlands for 14 months. Marguerite's work is positioned where urban studies, gender studies and sociologies of culture overlap. She has published on paternalism, sexualities, policy practices, urban revanchism, city marketing, immigrant 'integration', genderfication and Madonna.

 This is a very short summary of my argument:

My dissertation is about the role policy interventions in childrearing practices play in imagining urban futures beyond the industrial past. It departs from the observation that in interurban competition today, mothers are recognized as key actors in what I term urban re-generation: efforts to renew the city by either investing in children (the next generation) of the current population or replacing the current population of children by a new generation in the form of material and economic restructuring. Urban re-generation supplements urban regeneration in the form of material and economic restructuring. It focuses on the city as a reproductive milieu. I researched one form of urban re-generation: parenting guidance practices in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. These are organized (almost exclusively) for mothers by the local government in collaboration with schools. I argue that parent classes are a distillation point of the city: a specific space in which much of the city’s conflicts, problems and challenges can be witnessed. On the basis of my ethnographic material, I show that in the practices, mothers and teachers (co) produce reflexive and communicative subject-positions in ritual-like transactions. These show remarkable resemblance to attributes of desired employers for the new service economies that many cities are aiming to stimulate.

Samengevat beargumenteer ik daar het volgende:

Kinderen en moeders spelen een belangrijke rol in beleid dat erop gericht is de stad te vernieuwen en te verbeteren. Mijn proefschrift gaat over deze prominente plaats van kinderen en moeders in stedelijk beleid in Rotterdam. Rotterdam wil zichzelf opnieuw uitvinden en voorbij het industriële verleden raken door een post-industriële economie te stimuleren, nieuwe wijken te bouwen en te investeren in de bevolking.
