Teaching
At Amsterdam University College, Emma Cohen de Lara teaches Classical and Modern Political Thought, which is an introductory course to political theory focused on readings from Plato to Nietzsche. She also teaches Ancient Philosophical Text in the Academic Core. Over the last few years, she has also taught Politics of Modernity with a focus on continental philosophy. She has also developed a course called Political Shakespeare, together with dr. Marco de Waard in the Humanities. The course focuses on the political dimensions of Shakespeare's work by bringing it into dialogue with insights from political theory, intellectual history and comparative literature.
Research interest
Emma Cohen de Lara's current research interest focuses on the conceptualization of citizenship in a changing world. Contemporary literature on citizenship tends to define citizenship as rights-based, that is, citizenship means political membership by means of which one is entitled to certain civic, social, and political rights. This strand of research on citizenship, however, tends to neglect the affective dimension of citizenship, or citizenship as the emotional experience of a collective bond. Emma's research currently explores this dimension of citizenship, drawing on the rich tradition of political theory. Emma Cohen de Lara is also interested in the ideal of a liberal education and the history and applicability of this ideal to Dutch higher education. She contributes to the promotion of liberal education through her teaching and conference presentations.
