Nina Holvast is a PhD researcher at the Paul Scholten Centre. She obtained her LLM in Criminal law and MSc in Criminology from Leiden University. She is working on a socio-legal dissertation involving a qualitative empirical study on Dutch courts. The research focuses on the role of judicial assistants and law clerks in the judicial decision making process. It also includes a four month visit to University College London as a visiting researcher.

Before starting her PhD research Nina Holvast worked for two years as a Junior Researcher and Teaching Fellow in Criminology at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. In this capacity she conducted several studies (on the administrative law approach to combating crime, real estate fraud and the monitoring of sex offenders), lectured undergraduate courses and supervised Master theses. She has also conducted research at the Research and Documentation Centre of the Ministry of Security and Justice (WODC). During her studies she was a research intern at the National Crime Squad, she worked as a law clerk at the trial court of The Hague and she was student assistant in a Moot Court course.
