Profile
Nienke obtained her LLB degree at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, where she was a research assistant in the context of the NWO funded project on Contested Constitutions: Exploring the foundations of modern democracies. Additionally, she spent half a year in Albania, working for the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Tirana. Upon return, Nienke started the LLM programme Public International Law at the University of Amsterdam and graduated cum laude in May 2011. During her master, she was research assistant to Prof. A. Nollkaemper.
In August 2011 Nienke started as a Ph.D researcher at the UvA. Her research seeks to determine what obligations states and/or international organizations have to prevent gross human rights violations under international law and how these obligations are distributed among multiple responsible actors. For the latter aspect, she will develop alongside and in close correspondence with the SHARES project. Alongside her research, she teaches the master course in International Human Rights Law and bachelor course in Fundamental Rights. In 2014, she will spend three months at the Centre for Governance and Public Policy at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia as a visiting scholar.
