What is the role of legal principles in safeguarding public interests in smart grid standards?
The transition to smarter energy grids is inevitable. The architecture of these smarter grids have a great influence on what aims these grids will support. Will they facilitate the shift towards fully decentralized sustainable energy production, or will they primarily help the balancing and operating the grid without necessarily any consequence for the type of energy? These questions are of great importance for the future of the energy market, yet in the standardization process they are left to the market to decide.
In this research Robin demonstrates the threats in the current standardization process for public interests in smart grids through amongst others Lawrence Lessig's theory of Code is the Law. From that point she shows what requirements the standardization process should meet to ensure the legitimacy of the standardization process, and with that encompass public interests.
