Publications and academic fields of interest

Until my retirement in September 2012 I was a lecturer at the European Studies department where I taught mostly about the history and politics of the Soviet Union and Russia. I also taught a yearly course on the history of the KGB and its predecessors, dealing with aspects of both internal repression and foreign intelligence operations. I still teach a course every year on KGB intelligence operations against the West at the Ad de Jonge Center for Intelligence and Security Studies of the University of Amsterdam. See the link to the Ad de Jonge Center and its intelligence studies program below.

Over the years, I have mostly written about two topics: - Russian and Soviet politics; - intelligence history, especially relating to the KGB and its successor organizations.

Other activities

I have been an active member of the Netherlands Intelligence Studies Association (NISA, see link below) from the moment it was established in 1991. Together with others, I organized several conferences on intelligence topics as well as courses on counterintelligence and related themes. I have given lectures on intelligence topics, present day Russian politics and related subjects. On the side, I developed a keen personal interest in military history and have visited the sites of many historical battlefields in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and the Czech Republic.
