SHORT BIO

Prof. Dr. Meindert Fennema is emeritus professor in Political Theory at the University of Amsterdam. He published extensively on anti-immigration parties, ethnic mobilisation, political theory and political violence. He still teaches a Political Theory course in the Department of Political Science. In 2007 he published in Dutch a biography of Hans Hirschfeld, the highest Dutch civil servant under Nazi occupation and later the architect of the European Recovery Program. In 2010 he published 'Geert Wilders. Tovenaarsleerling' on the spectacular rise of an anti-immigrant politician in The Netherlands. He latest book, 'Help! De elite verdwijnt' (2012), is a collection of essays. In 2013 his first novel will be published (Het Abattoir, Prometheus). Since August 2012 he writes a weekly column in Volkskrant.nl.

De spectaculaire opkomst van buitenlandsebestuurdersen de aarzelende toetreding vanvrouwenin debestuurskamers hebben dit recent nog versterkt: het netwerk vandubbelfuncties raakt in verval en de commissariatenverzamelaar verdwijnt. Ook worden de netwerken tussen overheiden bedrijfsleven minder hecht.

 President Sukarno noemde hem 'de Man van het Grote Geld' toen hij Hans Max Hirschfeld als hoge commissaris van Nederland in zijn presidentiële paleis in Jakarta ontving. Kort daarna werd Hirschfeld geconfronteerd met een couppoging tegen Sukarno onder leiding van de beruchte kapitein Westerlind. Door koelbloedig optreden van de hoge commissaris werd een diplomatieke crisis bezworen.

CURRICULUM VITAE OF MEINDERT FENNEMA


            From 1975 until the present Meindert taught at the University of Amsterdam. His variegates courses were in de field of political science, political philosophy, international relations, ethnic and migration studies and sociology of elites. In 1981 he defended his Ph.D. thesis on International Networks of Banks and Industry (published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers in 1982). He received tenure as associate professor in Political Science in December 1981. In 1983 he published - in collaboration with the Dutch historian Henri Baudet - a monograph on the role of high civil servants at different Dutch ministries during the decolonisation of Indonesia (refer to Baudet/Fennema, 1983).

            In 1985 he directed an ECPR workshop in Barcelona on Communist Parties in Europe. This workshop had resulted in an international comparative research project on non ruling communist parties in Europe (refer to Fennema/Waller, 1988).

            In 1986 he was visiting professor at the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo where he tought a course on neoliberalism (refer to Fennema/Van der Pijl, 1987). Furthermore he did research on the role of racism in the discourse of the contemporary president of the Dominican Republic, Joaquin Balaguer. (refer to Fennema/Loewenthal, 1987; Fennema, 1998)

In 1988 he was invited for a three weeks lecturing tour in the People's Republic of China and in 1989 he was visiting scholar at the History Department of the University of California at Berkeley at the invitation of Professor Martin Jay. In spring 1992 he taught a course on anti-immigrant parties at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. From 1994 to 1998 he was Dean of the Amsterdam Center for Comparative European Social Studies (ACCESS) an English taught MA program at the University of Amsterdam.

            Meinder Fennema has translated Condorcet's Réflections sur l'esclavage des Negres into Dutch (Condorcet, 1989) In 1995 he published a textbook on the history of democratic thought. With the late Frank J Buijs he wrote a prize-winning essay on Democracy and Extremism (1998).

Research projects.

Since 1996 Meindert Fennema has been affiliated to the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES) as a member of the scientific program council and also as a senior researcher.

In 1999 a 250.000 Euro National Science Foundation grant was awarded to a project entitled "Religious extremism and democracy".                    

From 1996 onward Fennema has collaborated closely with Jean Tillie on networks of ethnic organizations and political participation (refer to Fennema, 2000, 2004; Fennema and Maussen 2000, 2004; Fennema and Tillie, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2008). In 1999 Fennema and Tillie received a NWO grant of 500.000 Euro for research in this field.

From 1993 onwards Fennema has published widely on anti-immigrant parties (refer to Elbers and Fennema 1993, Fennema 1997); from 2000 onwards jointly with Wouter van der Brug and Jean Tillie (Wouter van der Brug et al. 2000, 2003, 2005, 2007).

In 2004 Fennema received a NWO grant for writing a political biography on Hans Max Hirschfeld (1899-1961), the most powerful civil servant of The Netherlands in the 20 th century. Hirschfeld was contested because of his position as Secretary General of the ministries of Economic Affairs and Agriculture under Nazi occupation. After 1945 he became responsible for the European Recovery Program and the economic negotiations with Indonesia (refer to M. Fennema and J. Rhijnsburger, 2007)

With Eelke Heemskerk he has published a monograph on the Dutch economic elite (Fennema and Heemskerk, 2008, 2009) and with William K. Carroll he has published on the international networks of the corporate elites (Carroll and Fennema 2002; Carroll, Fennema and Heemskerk, 2010; Carroll et al. forthcoming)

His most successful book was on Geert Wilders 'Tovenaarsleerling' (Sorcerer's Apprentice published in 2010). It has sold 10.000 copies
