Rutger Helmers (1980) is universitair docent bij de capaciteitsgroep Muziekwetenschap, gespecialiseerd in negentiende-eeuwse muziekgeschiedenis, Russische muziek, opera en nationalisme. Hij is in 2012 aan de Universiteit Utrecht gepromoveerd bij Emile Wennekes en Marina Frolova-Walker (Clare College, Cambridge) op zijn proefschrift Not Russian Enough: The Negotiation of Nationalism in Nineteenth-Century Russian Opera. Sindsdien is hij buiten de UvA actief geweest aan de opleiding Muziekwetenschap aan de Universiteit Utrecht en Algemene Cultuurwetenschappen aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. In zijn huidige onderzoek richt hij zich onder meer op het reizen van negentiende-eeuwse musici.
