Research
Femke Gazendam (1983) is a PhD student working at the department of Clinical Psychology under supervision of Prof. dr. Merel Kindt and Prof. dr. Jan Henk Kamphuis. In 2009 she received a NWO TopTalent grant (Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research) for her PhD research proposal on the transition of adaptive fear responses to pathological anxiety.
Whereas several lines of research suggest that stable individual differences moderate the vulnerability for developing anxiety disorders, individual variability in fear learning is often ignored in experimental fear learning studies. Our experiments aim to test the effect of risk traits on associative fear and safety learning, to gain a better understanding of how initially adaptive fear associations evolve into pathological fears.
Short Biography
Femke obtained her bachelor's degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), which included one year of interdisciplinary studies at Boston College, USA (Cum Laude). After this, she completed the Research Master Psychology and the master program in Clinical Psychology at the UvA (Cum Laude). Her clinical internship concerned diagnostics and treatment at the policlinic anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorders (GGZinGeest, VU Medical Centre, supervised by Drs. Hillen, Dr. van Oppen and Prof. dr. van Balkom). During her Masters, she has worked as a research assistant of Prof. dr. Merel Kindt, and supervised several research projects testing the fear inhibition paradigm in healthy students and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients. In her Clinical Master's treatment study, she investigated the processes of virtual reality exposure therapy in patients with a specific phobia, supervised by Prof. dr. Paul Emmelkamp. The Research Master thesis project was pursued with Prof. dr. Merel Kindt, investigating the experimental effects of worry following fear acquisition on associative fear learning.
