We regret the loss of the beloved mayor of Amsterdam Eberhard van der Laan and our thoughts go out to his family and close ones. The municipality of Amsterdam announced today that a public memorial service will be held for the mayor on Friday 13 October in the Concertgebouw. Out of respect for the memorial service we will move our business seminar UvA in Carré: Made in Amsterdam to the Tuschinski Theatre, where our event will take place on the same date (Friday, 13 October) and at the same time (13:00 to 15:00) as originally scheduled.

Marelle van Beerschoten
Marelle van Beerschoten is only 30 years old and founder of Digital Shapers. Digital Shapers expands the digital mindset and creativity of organisations. A movement that inspires and implements changes that aid digital transformation. Marelle, who studied International Relations and Business, finds her inspiration in the rapidly developing digital world and the need for digital leadership. Her motto is that you need to adapt in order to survive, a process she experienced several times as an entrepreneur.
Harold is an entrepreneur and an innovator who has built TomTom into the global brand it is today. Under his leadership, TomTom has become synonymous with making incredibly smart products, so easy to use, that all people can benefit from them. He leads a company of nearly 5,000 people, developing and manufacturing products and services worldwide.
In 1991, Harold co-founded TomTom, which was to become a globally recognized brand when Harold made the bold decision to move into manufacturing hardware solutions and launching the first TomTom GO in 2004, creating an entirely new product category. TomTom has gone on to sell over 75 million PNDs globally and today, more than one billion people use TomTom technology every day.
Freke van Nimwegen
For Freke van Nimwegen, doing business is all about making the world a better place. She studied Business in Groningen, Hong Kong and Amsterdam (Msc. BA) and after two internships she knew that a regular marketing or sales job wasn’t for her. She chose Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as the topic for her graduation thesis. Determined to find a job in this field, she started her career at Ahold in 2012 at the CSR department.
One year of experience as Assistant Supermarket Manager at Albert Heijn combined with her work on waste management at the head office, made her wonder: why is so much food still thrown away in a world where resources are scarce and climate change is such a big concern. Following the philosophy of the circular economy and social entrepreneurship she believes that the only way to fight food waste is by making it valuable again. In other words: to create a business model around waste streams.
Together with three colleagues she participated in an innovation competition The Best Idea of Young Ahold in 2014 with the idea of starting a restaurant where food that would otherwise be wasted was turned into delicious meals. They won and started Instock, which currently operates three restaurants in Amsterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. With their restaurant and product line, they conserve tons of surplus food, but they also make policy makers, consumers and business managers more aware of the problem of food waste. With this success she was part of Forbes 30 under 30 in 2016 and the ‘Duurzame 100’ of Trouw for 2017.
