NWO Vici Grant for Geert Janssen
Professor Geert Janssen (ASH) has been awarded a Vici grant of 1.5 million Euros by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for the project 'The Invention of the Refugee in Early Modern Europe'.
Refugees have been common throughout history, but are for the first time described as such in the early modern period (1450-1750). This project explains why, when and how particular migrants started to call themselves ‘refugee’ and what consequences this had for the emergence of empathy, humanitarianism and states.
