Biography:

Evrim Emir-Sayers is a Ph.D. candidate in Philosophy at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis, University of Amsterdam. She is also a lecturer in Philosophy at San Francisco State University, USA, where she teaches various courses on Continental Philosophy, Existentialism, and Phenomenology. She spent the academic year 2012–13 at Princeton University, where she was a Research Collaborator in the Near Eastern Studies Department and a Graduate Fellow at Wilson College. In the summer of 2013, she assumed a position as Research Fellow at the Netherlands Institute in Turkey (Istanbul).  

Evrim’s current research focuses on the ontology of painting. Specifically, she is studying Middle Eastern miniature painting and the Sufi philosophical thought informing this art form. Her goal is to bring this Sufi/miniature tradition into dialogue with twentieth-century Western abstract art and the thinking of French phenomenologists such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Gilles Deleuze, and Jacques Derrida.  

Evrim has presented at various international conferences, including the Annual Joint Conference of the Society for European Philosophy and the Forum for European Philosophy, and the European Society for Aesthetics Conference. Her translations of Plato’s dialogues into Turkish (“Criton”, “Lysis”) were published in 2008 in the collection Platon Toplu Diyalogları I (Istanbul: Eos Yayınevi). Most recently, her article, “Gauging Proximities: An Inquiry into a Possible Nexus Between Middle Eastern and Western Painting,” was accepted for publication in the journal Philosophy and Literature.

Evrim was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey. While Turkish is her mother tongue, she has also studied French, Latin, Persian, Ottoman Turkish, Karamanlidika, German, and Ancient Greek. Aside from her academic career, Evrim is an accomplished poster designer and has designed the promotional material for many Princeton University events, including the March 13, 2013 concert by Charles Lloyd and Maria Farantouri, and “Aspects of Event,” the April 2013 seminar series by Slavoj Žižek.
