I have recently taken the position of Assistant Professor at the American University in Dubai. You can contact me there at jhetrick@aud.edu.
Profile
I am an adjunct lecturer in the Philosophy of Art and Culture.
I have recently defended my PhD thesis, entitled Cine-aesthetics: A Critique of Judgment after Deleuze and Michaux , in which I develop an interdisciplinary method of 'cine-aesthetics' in analyzing the drawings, paintings, writings, and film of the Belgian artist Henri Michaux utilizing resources from the philosophy of art as well as from literary, film, and art theories. The overall motivation of my research is to bridge the gap between philosophical aesthetics and art theory in the analysis of works. The largely uncritical dismissal of each of these fields by the other has most often been reactionary and unfounded and I believe that attempts to reconcile them will provide a much richer set of resources for the study of art.
I am currently developing a new research project entitled 'Confounding Border Aesthetics in Contemporary Art,' which sets out to investigate different ways in which concepts, practices, and representations of borders - broadly construed - have been problematized in recent photo, video, and film installations. I am also working on three book projects: re-editing my PhD thesis for publication; a translation, with critical introduction, of Maurizio Lazzarato's Videophilosophy; as well as an edited and translated volume (with Gary Genosko) of Félix Guattari's writings on Japan and Japanese artists.
Research Interests
continental aesthetics and philosophy of art; 20th century art and art theory; politics of aesthetics; biopolitics; comparative aesthetics; philosophies of nature and life; american pragmatism; critical theory; art informel, abstract expressionism, cobra, gutai; problems of medium in contemporary art (esp. between photography, video, film)
