Nassau on horseback

Art History

08May2015 14:00 - 15:00

PhD defence ceremony

For more than two thousand years authoritative individuals have been portrayed on horseback in the form of bronze statues, on coins or medallions, in paintings, prints and, more recently, on films and television. Much has been written about the aesthetics qualities of such objects, but their meaning and function have received much less attention. It is this aspect, the function of equestrian portraits, and specifically those of the Dutch royal house of Orange-Nassau, that Paul Rijkens investigates in his research.

P.R. Rijkens: Nassau on Horseback, Meaning, Form and Function of Nassau Equestrian Imagery in the Netherlands Since the 16th Century.
