The Faculty of Humanities offers 28 Bachelor’s programmes and over 60
Master’s programmes. The faculty has a student population of about 7000.
The curriculum of the language Bachelor’s programmes is traditional, yet
unique in the Netherlands: the programmes are explicit and focused from start to
finish on the respective language and culture. The language Bachelor’s
programmes are therefore not tracks within a broader language study programme.
There are three types of Master’s programmes at the Faculty: one-year
Master’s (60 ECTS), Professional Master’s (90 or 120 ECTS; selection procedure)
and Research Master’s (120 ECTS, selection procedure). In addition, the Faculty
also offers the Master’s programme Wijsbegeerte van een bepaald
wetenschapsgebied(120 ECTS) and the Master’s programme
Conservering en restauratie van cultureel erfgoed (120 ECTS).
A number of programmes are unique in the Netherlands. These include
Nieuwgrieks (Bachelor’s programme), Gebarentaalwetenshap, and
the specialisation Western Esotericism (part of the study programme Religious
Studies).
The Faculty of Humanities is the only Dutch faculty offering a (selective)
university study programme Conservation and Restoration (with eight
specialisations). Restorers from the Rijksmuseum (State Museum) and researchers
from the Rijksdient voor Cultureel Ergoed work together with UvA students and
lecturers in the Ateliergebouw (Atelier Building)on the Amsterdam Museumplein
(Museum Square).
The faculty honours programme for Bachelor’s students (30 ECTS, selection
procedure) takes place during the second and third year. Aside from the faculty
honours programme, there is also the honours programme Art and Research, which
is offered in partnership with the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.
In the second and third year of all Bachelor’s programmes, students can
shape the curriculum by choosing electives or minors in accordance with their
own interests for a total of 42 ECTS. A broad range of electives can be chosen.
A minor is a collection of courses totaling 24 or 30 ECTS. Students can also
take minors offered by other faculties.
All Master’s programmes are made up of electives totalling 12 ECTS or more.
Every year about 300 of the Faculty’s students study at a foreign
university, while approximately 200 exchange students take courses at the
Faculty. Half of the Master’s programmes are taught in English.
The Illustere School offers three types of public events for interested
parties hailing from outside of the University: Open UvA Lectures (participants
join students in the lecture halls), thematic events and guided tours (in which
a subject, exposition or theme is discussed by scholars), and special lecture
series (specially developed for a broader public, and provided by humanities
scholars).
In addition, the Illustere School also offers three types of refresher
programmes: Master’s courses (for secondary education lecturers, especially
pre-university education), study courses (shortened Master’s programmes for
specific target audiences, such as the study course Redacteur/Editor for
publishing staff), and annual refresher courses for alumni.
