Mission Statement

The mission of the Faculty of Science is based on that of a research university: an institute for higher education where, in close interdependence, excellence in teaching and research is pursued.

The Faculty of Science covers a wide field of research, including biology, physical geography, earth and environmental science, chemistry, physics, astronomy, mathematics and informatics. Its research programme, in which multidisciplinary developments are stimulated alongside excellent monodisciplinary research, has placed the Faculty of Science in a leading international position. The Faculty derives its strength both from the quality of this research programme as well as from the quality of its educational programme, which appeals to a growing stream of students, both in the framework of regular university programmes as well as in newer educational markets.

Its research and educational policies form the Faculty’s response to its scientific and social responsibilities.

The Faculty seeks to attain maximum development of the talents of students, PhD students, scientific and non-scientific staff. This is achieved on the one hand by the quality and flexibility of the research and educational environment and on the other hand by making high demands with regard to the effort put in by students and staff alike.

One of the objectives of the Faculty is that the make-up of its student, PhD student and staff populations mirrors that of our society, especially with regard to the participation of women and persons from ethnic minority groups.

The Faculty of Science is a part of the University of Amsterdam and also aims at promoting and realizing the aims and objectives of this establishment.
