Anna’s Garden and Thicket nominated for best green initiative North Holland
Anna’s Garden and Thicket, the nature- and horticultural area to be developed on Amsterdam Science Park, is nominated for the ‘Golden Bittern’: a prize for the best green initiative in the North Holland province. The initiators will present their plans at the GreenCapital conference on 11 February in Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam. Subsequently, the winner will be announced.
Anna’s Garden and Thicket is the area between the Faculty of Science building and the ring road, and was originally designated as a nature- and water reserve. Thinking that the area has more to offer, a group of current and former students of the Faculty of Science wrote a two-part development plan in order to realize both the social and the ecological potential of the land. Within this plan, one-and-a-half hectare will be partly developed into a permaculture and partly as a thicket for nature to run its course.
By developing the area in a nature-friendly way, the initiators wish to promote a diverse habitat for plants and animals. This way, the land will be a space where nature can flourish and locals, employees, students and visitors can enjoy a green environment. Moreover, with it’s location on the university’s doorstep, there is a unique opportunity for research into this new type of urban nature.
