Theme: The freedom to study and conduct research
The UAF Scholars at Risk project helps academics fleeing from persecution to find a safe, temporary workplace in the Netherlands or Belgium. Some of their stories have been included in a theatre piece titled 'De Verboden Wetenschapsmonologen'. One of the monologues, based on the true story of Congolese professor Felix Kaputu, will be presented during the Liberation Day meal.
This will be followed by a lecture given by UvA Professor of International Refugee Law Marjoleine Zieck and Evelien van Roemburg, PhD candidate at the Amsterdam Center for International Law of the UvA’s Faculty of Law. The theme is how WWII led to progressive policies regarding refugees, and the relevance this has today. Afterwards a Q&A session will be held with Maxim Abdulatif, a lecturer who fled Syria last year.
