Effects of nutrient enrichment on coral reef

Microbiology

PhD defence ceremony

Coral reefs are highly diverse and productive ecosystems that grow in tropical oceans. In the past few decades human activities in tropical coastal waters have enriched these with nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, a process known as eutrophication. Examples of such activities are sewage discharge and land runoff augmented by coastal construction. Joost den Haan’s research investigates the effects of eutrophication on the corals, benthic algae and cyanobacteria that inhabit tropical reefs.
