Microscale distribution of microbes in sediment

The highest levels of microbial activity in marine sedimentary environments generally occur in the topmost layer, as a result of the organisms that grow there if light reaches the surface. The organic matter these organisms produce is broken down by bacteria via a series of different metabolic pathways. Catia Carreira’s research shows the heterogeneity of both the horizontal and vertical distribution of viruses and bacteria in a tidal sediment from Dunstaffnage Bay in Scotland.
