Mieke Zaanen appointed Director General of the KNAW

18 November 2014

Mieke Zaanen, Secretary General of the University of Amsterdam (UvA), has been appointed Director General of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), effective 1 February 2015.

As Secretary General of the UvA since 2007, Mieke Zaanen has been responsible for the Executive Staff, the provision of support to the Executive Board and deans, integrated safety and all staff of the shared service units.

Louise Gunning, president of the Executive Board: ‘This is a major loss for the UvA. Mieke is a lynchpin in the web of many ongoing organisational and executive processes and has played a crucial role for many years within the organisation. But, needless to say, I’m delighted for her and understand this step. It’s a wonderful position and Mieke will be an excellent successor to Hans Chang at the KNAW.’

Before being appointed Secretary General of the UvA, Mieke Zaanen served respectively as project manager of organisational change and legal advice, director of operational management at the Faculty of Science and management coordinator. She graduated in Law at the UvA.

The process to find a successor to Mieke Zaanen will start immediately.
