NWO Creative Industries Strategic Research grant for Maarten de Rijke
Professor Maarten de Rijke has obtained à € 721,000.- grant for a Strategic Research proposal within the Creative Industries programme of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). De Rijke leads the research group on Information and Language Processing Systems at the University of Amsterdam's Informatics Institute.
Together with José van Dijck, professor of Comparative Media Studies at the UvA'sFaculty of Humanities, and Johan Oomen, National Institute for Sound and Vision, he will work on search technology for large multimedia archives.
The aim is to develop and test open source search solutions for exploring large multimedia archives. The target users are media-professionals. The proposed innovations at the interface of computer science and media studies come in three kinds. First, development, testing and release of self-learning search algorithms that adapt and improve their behavior while being used. Second, robust methods for semantically analyzing content in media archives will be created. Third, development of new search engine result page presentations that provide automatically generated storylines as narratives for professionals in the creative industries.
Other project partners are 904Labs, Bibliotheek Eindhoven, DISPECTU, EYE filmmuseum, Frontwise, NOS, NPO, NTR, RTL nieuws, Talpa Producties B.V., Videodock, Vlaams Instituut voor Archivering, VPRO, XMI, and Zimmerman Zimmerman.
