NWO Grant for research project Max Welling
Max Welling, professor of Computer Science at the Informatics Institute, has been awarded a NWO grant together with Dr Laurens van der Maaten (TU Delft) for the call ‘Natural Artificial Intelligence’. The research project is titled: Learning the Fundamental Symmetries in Video Data.
About the project
Video consists of many millions of colored pixels. How can computers make sense of abstract concepts like jogger and jogging from these pixel streams? A mathematical theory of symmetries (group-theory) forms the basis for separating intrinsic properties such as object identity from non-intrinsic properties such as orientation or lighting. Group-theory forms the foundation for physics theories such as the standard model and general relativity. In this project Welling and Van der Maaten will use the same theory to develop new technology that will allow computers to understand and interpret video.
About NWO
The NWO programma Natural Artificial Intelligence is multidisciplinair and focuses on the connection between natural and artificial intelligence. Also the UvA-researchers Sennay Ghebreab (Amsterdam University College) en Steven Scholte, (Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences) receive Nwo-funding for their researchproject.Read here more about the NOW (in Dutch).
