Astronomer Sera Markoff appointed Fellow of the American Physical Society
Dr Sera Markoff of the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy has been appointed a Fellow of the American Physical Society. She received the honour for her research into compact objects that attract matter.
Markoff has contributed significantly to the understanding of how the jet streams of matter emitted by black holes of varying masses are formed. She will receive her certificate at the APS conference in April 2015.
The American Physical Society (APS) is the American organisation for physicists. Each year, the organisation appoints a select group of only 0.5 per cent of its members as Fellows. Fellows are those members who have made an outstanding contribution to physics research, to its application in physics education or who have played a leading role.
