Help to lay the foundations for the best possible tax system

Where would the state be without tax? And the rest of society? Fiscal Economics teaches you about all the considerations that need to be weighed up in how tax revenue is used.

Fiscal Economics is a fascinating subject. The tax system is the site of the most complex balancing act between ‘what society wants’ and ‘what individuals and companies want’. And fiscal economists are tasked with using their skills to critically assess this. You will learn to identify and research the relationship between economic and legal aspects of taxation, as a way of creating the foundations for the best possible tax system.

A single euro can only be collected once, and spent once. Good fiscal decisions therefore require a thorough understanding of the workings of the economy. Furthermore, our tax system is also based on law. Are those laws good enough? Are there flaws in them, or do they have any unfortunate impacts? As a fiscal economist you also approach fiscal challenges in a legal way. Fiscal Economics is therefore an interdisciplinary degree programme, in which you will take courses at the College of Economics and Business as well as at the Faculty of Law.

Fiscal Economics is a three-year full-time Bachelor's programme at the UvA. Studying at the UvA is an unforgettable experience which will benefit you for the rest of your personal and professional life.
