Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR)

The Amsterdam School of Communications Research (ASCoR) represents the communication scientists and Communication Science, as well as PhD students of the Universiteit van Amsterdam.

ASCoR conducts research at an advanced level into communication and media's infrastructure, contents, and effects, in a society characterised by an increasing importance of, and dependence on, communication and information. ASCoR research is rooted in the empirical analytical tradition, where research is aimed at theory development and theory testing based on data. The aim is high quality research into fundamental aspects of communications, its social potentials and effects. ASCoR also addresses applied research questions in the field of communications as part of the School's societal task next to taking the opportunity to learn from real life situations.

ASCoR aims to be a truly international research organisation with respect to research topics, publication outlets, PhD students, exchange programmes and personnel. Perhaps the most characteristic feature of communication is its diversity: it ranges from the mass media and popular culture, through language to individual science and social behavior. As a research school in Communication Science, ASCoR appreciates several different levels of analysis, bodies of theory, and evidence.
