Mario Rutten
Mario Rutten is Professor of Comparative Sociology and Anthropology of Asia at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam. He studied sociology at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. He obtained his Ph.D. ( cum laude) in 1991 at the University of Amsterdam with a study on the economic behaviour and life-style of large farmers and rural industrialists in central Gujarat, India. In 1992 he received a five year postdoctoral fellowship ( Akademie Onderzoeker) from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) to undertake a comparative study on the class of rural capitalists in Southeast Asia based on fieldwork in central Java (Indonesia) and Kedah state (Malaysia). In 1999-2000, he held a one year Research Fellowship at the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS) in Copenhagen, Denmark. From 1 st January until 1 st April, Mario Rutten held a three-months Visiting Research Fellowship at the Asian Research Institute (ARI) of the National University of Singapore.
Between 1991 and 2000, Mario Rutten was the Research Manager of the Centre for Asian Studies Amsterdam (CASA)/-Amsterdam School for Social Science Research, University of Amsterdam. Between 2000 and 2002, he was assistant professor and associate professor at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the University of Amsterdam. Since 2002, he is a full-time Professor in Comparative Sociology and Anthropology of Asia at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam.
Mario Rutten has been the founder and head of the Amsterdam Branch Office of the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) and founder-Director of the Platform ASiA (Asian Studies in Amsterdam) of the University of Amsterdam. At this moment he is a Fellow of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), University of Amsterdam. He is a member of various national and international committees related to Asian studies. At this moment, he is a.o. member of the board of the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), chairman of the academic committee of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies, and co-Chairman of the Joint Academic Committee India-Netherlands of ICSSR (Indian Council for Social Science Research) and NWO (National Dutch Scientific Council).
Over the years, Mario Rutten has been involved in various international collaborative research programmes on India, Indonesia, and Asia in general, all of them externally funded (see cv for details):

Mario Rutten is also involved in a photoproject on Globalization in India and Holland, and in a filmproject on young Indian migrants in London and their social linkages with relatives in India.
