I am an assistant professor of sociology (UD) at the University of Amsterdam. From 2003 to 2006 I was a visiting lecturer at the University of Chicago, and from 2006 to 2008 a lecturer at the Université Paris 1-Panthéon Sorbonne.

My research has dealt with citizenship, migration, employment, labor, gender, sexuality, and inequality, mainly in France and the United States. Following my ethnography of day labor agency work and social movements in the Chicago region, I completed a collective study exploring the labor-market experience and following the union-supported mobilization of undocumented immigrant workers in France, together with Pierre Barron, Anne Bory, Nicolas Jounin and Lucie Tourette. With Nicolas Jounin, I have been carrying out comparative analysis on the implications of temporary staffing for migrant employment precarity in Paris and Chicago. With Blanca Garcés-Mascareñas, I have been developing a theoretical framework for the moral economy of migrant illegality across several key countries.

I continue to explore the relationship between precarious work, the welfare state, and civic inequality in Europe. In the past years, I have engaged in two other ongoing collaborative projects, with Bruno Cousin on the symbolic economy of social capital and the sociology of global elites in Europe and the Caribbean, and with Olga Sezneva on the critical history of the commodity form, focusing on the economics of cultural, virtual and agricultural products.

Throughout the last decade, I maintained a continuous interest in gender and sexuality studies, publishing broad syntheses with Laure Bereni, Alex Jaunait, Anne Revillard, and Arnaud Lerch. Most recently, I have begun new empirical research comparing the migratory dynamics, conjugal existence, and legal hurdles faced by same-sex transnational, migrant and binational couples and families in EU countries and US states that passed marriage equality.
