Research interests

My very first research was in the field of Social Informatics. However, my current Urban Studies research activities follow three interrelated tracks:

1. Spatial patterning with regard to class, life course, ethnicity and sexuality: household mobility, segregation, gentrification and neighbourhood dynamics

2. Cultural politics and institutions shaping the city: popular culture, the state and housing systems

3. Political and popular backlash: electoral geographies 

Keywords: urban studies and geography, welfare state, housing and urban policies, disadvantaged neighbourhoods, neighbourhood regeneration and renewal, (state-led) gentrification, household mobility and urbanisation processes, electoral geographies and radical right-wing populist voting.

De Buurt als Jas; Veranderlijke Huishoudens in een Veranderlijke Stad

Sako Musterd, Annalies Teernstra, Wouter van Gent, Thea Dukes

Stedelijke interventies, gericht op de herstructurering van woonmilieus, kenmerken zich door een bepaalde visie op de functie van de buurt. De tot nu toe dominante visie wordt gekenmerkt door een relatief statische kijk op de relatie tussen bewoners en hun woonomgeving; biedt weinig ruimte voor verschillende oriëntaties van uiteenlopende huishoudens; en legt een accent op het aanbieden van woningen en woonmilieus. De 'evenwichtige' sociaal gemengde buurt en ingrepen vanuit het perspectief van de buurt zijn kenmerkend. De veranderende maatschappelijke context vraagt echter om een kritische evaluatie van deze visie, en om de ontwikkeling van alternatieve gezichtspunten. In De Buurt als Jas wordt een dergelijke nieuwe visie ontwikkeld. De dynamische relatie tussen huishoudens, woningen en woonmilieus wordt hierbij centraal gesteld; verschil tussen buurten wordt positief gewaardeerd; en het perspectief van het huishouden is een leidend beginsel.
