SHORT BIO

Asli holds a Bachelor's degree in English Literature and a Master's degree in Critical Theory. During the latter, she became increasingly exposed to video art, which led to an ever-deepening interest in cinema and film theory. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA), University of Amsterdam. Affiliated with the mediality constellation at ASCA, her research focuses on the aesthetics and politics of cinematic pedestrianism. Also a film critic, Asli has contributed to several edited volumes, festival catalogues, and popular magazines. At ASCA, she has co-organised the 2012 edition of the ASCA Workshop. She is a member of European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (NECS).

RESEARCH FOCUS

The Image of Walking: Aesthetics and Politics of Cinematic Pedestrianism
This project aspires to be a critical and analytical study of the image of walking in cinema. The motivation of the project is two-fold: To analyse the aesthetics of the cinematic image of walking, and to move from aesthetics to politics by focusing on the particular case of the flâneuse.
