Biography

Karin Pfeffer is geographer, Assistant Professor Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and coordinator of the GIS centre. With respect to research she participates in the research group Governance and Inclusive Development. Her fields of interest are the generation of information from different spatial data sources in urban areas using GIS and how information is used in urban management. She has been involved in setting up a regional monitoring system for the region of Amsterdam, has been involved in a project on the role of spatial information infrastructures for tackling urban poverty in Indian cities and currently she works on the European project chance2sustain on how governments and citizens in cities with differing patterns of urban economic growth make use of participatory (or integrated) spatial knowledge management to direct urban governance towards more sustainable development.

Research and research projects

2010-2014  chance2sustain  - Chance2Sustain is a research project examining how governments and citizens in Indian, South African, Peruvian and Brazilian cities with differing patterns of urban economic growth make use of participatory (or integrated) spatial knowledge management to direct urban governance towards more sustainable development. The focus of Karin Pfeffer is on the potential and limitations of (participatory) spatial knowledge management for urban development. http://www.chance2sustain.eu

2007-2012 URBIIS - The role of spatial information infrastructures for tackling urban poverty in Indian cities, financed by NWO-wotro Integrated programme. The research program focuses on how urban governance networks can tackle urban inequalities and household deprivations in large Indian cities, by using local spatial information infrastructure (SII).

2003-2007  Regional monitor Amsterdam , financed by the University of Amsterdam; the aim of this project was to set up a GIS-based monitoring system for the larger region of amsterdam to visualize spatial concentrations of social characteristics based on demographic and socio-economic municipal databases referring to the 6-digit postcode. The online-version of the monitor is available at http://mapinfoserver.fmg.uva.nl.

1998-2003 GETS (A European research network for the application of Geomorphology and Environmental Impact Assessment to Transport Systems). Further information can be found on the webpage http://www.feweb.vu.nl/gis/research/gets/Default.htm.
