Short Biography

I am a lecturer at the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies and specialize in the field of Urban Geography. The great thing about this field is that I get to observe and experience what I teach and study on a daily basis while biking through the city of Amsterdam, where I was born and raised and which has gone through such dramatic changes in the last 20-30 years. I always try to incorporate such 'everyday' observations in Amsterdam and other places that I explored in person or in the mind into my teaching (see next page for more information).

As a researcher I am also affiliated to the Center for Urban Studies and the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research. In my research I explore questions concerning the meaning of neighborhoods for residents from a broad perspective, often taking their experiences as a starting point. November 2014

My newest paper 'Moving considerations of middle-class residents in Durch disadvantaged neighbourhoods: exploring the relationship between disorder and attachment' isw published in Environtment and Planning A. The paper was written together with colleagues Matthieu Permentier from the Universiteit Utrecht and Karin Wittebrood from the National Institute for Social Research.

Basisspecialisatie Stadsgeografie

Het vak basisspecialisatievak Stadsgeografie: stedelijke dynamiek en stedelijk leven (12 ECTS vak is gericht op het combineren van theorie over grootstedelijke vraagstukken (op basis van hoorcolleges en literatuur) en praktijk (het trainen van observatievermogen in het veld door middel van excursies en individuele opdrachten, die worden besproken in werkcolleges). Een beschrijving van het vak vind je in de studiegids van de UvA.

Het vak is een kernvak voor geografen in het tweede jaar, maar is ook geschikt als keuzevak. De laatste jaren werd ons vak gevolgd door o.a. derdejaars geografen, planologen, (stads)sociologen, anthropologen, ASW-ers, (kunst)historici en bouwkunde-studenten.  Het vak is geschikt voor tweedejaars en derdejaars studenten. Het 12EC vak maakt ook deel uit van de keuzevakken voor de minor  Urban Studies. Studenten die deze minor volgen en over aantoonbare voorkennis beschikken, kunnen desgewenst alleen het eerste deel van het vak (stedelijke dynamiek) volgen als keuzevak voor 6 EC. Zij dienen uiterlijk 5 werkdagen na aanvang van het vak een verzoek hiertoe in te dienen bij de coördinator van Stadsgeografie (komend studiejaar is dat Dr. Willem Boterman) en de coördinator van de minor Urban Studies. Studenten die de verkorte variant willen volgen, krijgen een aangepaste paper-opdracht, maar volgen verder het gewone programma. Houdt er wel rekening mee dat het vak is opgezet als 12 EC vak en de twee delen (stedelijke dynamiek en stedelijk leven) elkaar aanvullen: het eerste blok studenten laat kennis maken met bredere stedelijke ontwikkelingen en het tweede blok biedt verdere verdieping. Het tweede deel van het vak over stedelijk leven is niet afzonderlijk te volgen, omdat dan noodzakelijke voorkennis ontbreekt. Onze ervaring van voorgaande jaren is dat studenten van de minor Urban Studies juist het tweede deel, wat ingaat op het dagelijks leven in de stad, een interessante aanvulling biedt op het bredere macro-perspectief, met themas als verstedelijkingsvraagstukken, segregatie en de ontwikkeling van buurten, uit het eerste blok . 

Scriptiebegeleiding

Ben je student en van plan binnenkort een individuele bachelor-, master- of Research Masterscripie  te gaan schrijven op het gebied van stadsgeografie o fop het snijvlak van stadsgeografie en planologie? Hieronder vind je een lijst met onderwerpen, waarbij ik je kan begeleiden. Enkele suggesties voor mogelijke scriptie-onderwerpen:

• betekenis van plaats voor sociaal kapitaal
• betekenis van plaats voor het zoeken en vinden van werk
• gebruik en beleving openbare ruimte in achterstandswijken

• schoolkeuze en schoolsegregatie

Research interests

My research covers a wide range of issues relating to the meaning of neighborhood, including questions about the way in which residents' everyday routines become embedded  in the neighborhood in which they live (or not!); how the neighborhood enables or limits their opportunities to improve their lives and how - when neighborhood forms a meaningful place to residents - it is then acted upon. I have explored these questions in different types of neighborhoods (from low income neighborhoods to the Amsterdam canal belt) and for different groups of residents, using both qualitative and quantitative methods to provide insight in a variety of neighborhood-related themes, including:

• neighborhood attachment and belonging, focusing on the way in which people relate to the places in which they live, whereby I interpret these not as a given or fixed, but as a process which may change over time and develops or is avoided through everyday practices of residents;
• micro-politics of neighborhood life, exploring whether and how neighborhoods may function as informal territories for particular social groups (despite the fact that most urban neighborhoods are relatively heterogeneous in the Dutch context) and to what degree residents with different social positions are involved in processes of place-making, with an understanding that there may be substantial inequalities in the degree to which different meanings are acknowledged and accommodated in these processes;
• 'living with difference', questioning how residents in mixed neighborhoods and housing projects experience and respond to living in close proximity to 'others' and studying under which conditions social mix programs can contribute to positive experiences of diversity;
• place-based social networks, comparing neighboring and networking in areas of concentrated poverty and mixed neighborhoods and studying the consequences of local social contacts for individual social capital and socialization, which may over time translate into neighborhood effects;
• segregation, residential mobility and neighborhood dynamics, both from a macro-perspective and from the perspective of everyday life.

Recent research-related activities in progress

• Collaborating with colleague Richard Ronald on the Dutch case study of his ERC-project HOUWEL;
• Collaborating in the JPI Urban Eurpe project ICEC, in the role of supervisor of PhD-student Myrte Hoekstra;
• Wrapping up the fieldwork for research project on neighborhood attachment and territorial strategies of different resident groups in Betondorp, an old working class neighborhood in Amsterdam, building on Suttles' concept of defended neighborhoods;
• Developing a research project on supergentrification, diseyfication and experiences of home and belonging of early gentrifiers in the Amsterdam Canal Belt, together with colleague Willem Boterman;
• Supervision of PhD-student Annalies Teernstra on her research on neighborhood upgrading and downgrading;
• Working on a paper with PhD-student Anouk Tersteeg (Universiteit Utrecht) on resident experiences of living in tenure-mixed housing projects, which we presented at the IBG-RGS conference 2015 in London.

• maak ik me regelmatig druk over het gebrek aan nuance in het publie debat over arme wijken en de misleidende en stigmatiserende labels die daarin gebruikt worden;
• en klim ik dan ook wel eens in de pen, zie bijvoorbeeld mijn reactie op het stuk Afrowijk in de Groene Amsterdammer (naar mijn mening het zoveelste voorbeeld was van Bijlmer bashing), mijn  kritische reactie op de term 'moslimwijken' in de Trouw en op de radio bij het programma CritiX  van FunX en een recent opiniestuk in het Parool met collega Wouter van Gent over onvrede van bewoners in Amsterdamse tuindorpen, mede op basis van mijn onderzoek in Betondorp.
