Dr. Bas van den Putte is Professor of Health Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) at the University of Amsterdam. Dr. van den Putte is an expert on sociocognitive theories of health behavior and advertising, and is an experienced researcher in the field of formative and evaluative research in health prevention.

His chair is sponsored by Trimbos Institute, the Netherlands Institute for Mental Health and Addiction. His aim is to initiate and conduct research that increases theoretical insight into the relationship between content of health campaigns, interpersonal communication, and health behavior as well as can be used by practitioners to increase the effectiveness of health campaigns via traditional and new media, schools and/or institutional settings. Besides his cooperation with Trimbos Institute, Van den Putte also cooperates with and is a member of the research and communication advisory boards of other organizations such as Rutgers WPF/Sti Aids Netherlands, Netherlands Nutrition Centre, the Ministry of General Affairs, and the Ministry of Safety and Justice.

In the past he has received grants from NWO and ZonMW, as well as grants from numerous health promoting institutions (e.g., Trimbos, Stivoro, Sti Aids Netherlands). His work includes longitudinal evaluation studies of smoking cessation, cannabis education, and condom use campaigns. He has served on the advisory board of studies into alcohol use, alcohol advertising, tobacco cessation, and dieting.

He has published in journals such as Addictive Behaviors, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Appetite, British Journal of Social Psychology, Drug and Alcohol Dependence, Health Communication, Health Psychology, International Journal of Advertising, Journal of Health Communication, Patient Education and Counseling, Prevention Science, Preventive Medicine, Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, Psychology & Health, Structural Equation Modeling, and Tobacco Control.
