Nanke Verloo

Nanke specializes in processes of urban conflict, protest, and exclusion. She studies how episodes of conflict can create opportunities for inclusive governance. In the master Conflict Resolution and Governance (GSSS) she teaches about identity and exclusion in the face of conflict. In the bachelor Political Science she teaches and coordinates the minor Conflict Studies. 

'When people are in conflict they care. Therefore, conflicts bring together diverse groups who organize and protest against the state. To understand conflict as a moment of opportunity for urban democracies, we have to look beyond regular attempts to include citizens in decision making. The opportunities in episodes of conflict lie in the unconventional and informal practices that citizens develop to voice their stories at the street-level. The quality of our democracy is contingent on our ability to allow these voices into the public sphere and inform public decision making.' 

Nanke's PhD dissertation proposes the Social-Spatial Narrative framework to understand the process of conflict and the discursive performances of residents, policy makers, and local welfare practitioners who seek to voice their stories. Her study unravels the negotiation of politics, identity, and belonging in 3 ethnographic case studies in Amsterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht. 

During her PhD research she was a visiting scholar at the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (S-CAR) at George Mason University where she worked with Sara Cobb to understand the use of narrative to study conflict.

She facilitates training for civil servants in local governments to transform conflicts in moments of opportunity by developing skills for negotiation, communication, and narrative analysis. And keeps a blog in which she writes about 'small stories to rethink large issues'. www.nankeverloo.com 

Nanke has a background in Anthropology and Public Policy. She did a master in Conflict Resolutionand Governance at the ISHSS. For her master thesis, she conducted ethnographic fieldwork in rural and urban Morocco, looking for the connection between return migration and local civil society.
