Sipco Vellenga is Associate Professor of Sociology of Religion at the UvA. His major fields of expertise are the evangelical movement, religion, healing and health (care), discourses on religion and Islam in Europe, national states and religious diversity  as well as the development of religion under conditions of late-modernity. In his research he combines a historical interest with social studies; he takes a special delight in comparative studies. After a technical study (HTS Chemistry), Vellenga studied Sociology at the University of Groningen and Sociology of Religion at the Free University, Amsterdam (cum laude). In his dissertation (1991) he analysed the growth of the evangelical movement in the Netherlands since the 1960s. Between 1998 and 2002 he was director of the Education Institute Theology and Religious studies of the UvA. At the moment he is member of the Board of the College of Humanities of this university. Vellenga teaches five courses a year. He is working on a monograph on the societal position and role of religion in contemporary Europe and publications on the issue of anti-Semitism and islamophobia in Europe. He is project leader (with Gerard Wiegers) of the NWO funded project Delicate Relations. Muslims and Jews in Amsterdam and London.

Vellenga is involved in three projects:

. Relations between Religious Minorities in a Post-secular Context

. Discourses on Religion in Public Debates in European countries

. Religion and Paradoxes of Late-Modernity

 

In 2010, the WODC awarded a grant to Sipco Vellenga and Gerard Wiegers to do research on the way leaders of ten Muslim and eleven non-Muslim organizations responded to several expressions of criticism of Islam in the Netherlands. This project resulted in the publication Religion, Binding and Polarization? Responses of the Leadership of Muslim and non-Muslim Organizations to Criticism of Islam in the Netherland (2011).

In 2013, Sipco Vellenga and Gerard Wiegers received a NWO-grant for the research project Delicate relations: Jews and Muslims in Amsterdam and London. This comparative, interdisciplinary research project (Islamic Studies, Jewish Studies, Sociology of Religion) focuses on the relations between Jewish and Muslim groups in London and Amsterdam within their respective local, national and international social and political contexts. Two PhD-students are involved in the project.
