The University of Amsterdam offers a wide variety of activities to students and staff in the areas of culture and sport.

Get creative with one of CREA's courses in art, music and media. The university's sport facility (USC) offers a wide range of sport activities at a variety of locations throughout Amsterdam.


As the UvA's cultural hub, the CREA regularly organises a wide range of cultural activities for students and staff in fields including

  • music
  • theatre
  • dance
  • the visual arts
  • photography
  • literature and new media.

In addition, the CREA annually produces approximately 100 performances, concerts and exhibitions, as well as a weekly Studium Generale programme on subjects related to art, science and society.

Spui25 is an academic-cultural centre located on Amsterdam’s Spui square. It hosts discussions, debates and interviews, as well as book presentations, lectures and award ceremonies. With its programmes, the centre targets both the academic community of researchers, lecturers, alumni and students, as well as a wide public with broad literary and cultural interests.

Hall hire to external parties

The hall at SPUI25 can be hired by external parties for activities falling within the centre’s academic-cultural context. The cost of hire is €425, excluding additional costs. To discuss more options, please send an email to or call +31 (0)20 525 8142.

University Sports Centre (USC)

The USC is the sports centre of the UvA and AUAS. The facility is open seven days a week and offers over 70 sports activities at affordable rates. The USC has various locations spread throughout the city of Amsterdam.

The USC’s main building is situated at Amsterdam Science Park. The other USC sport centres in Amsterdam can be found at the following locations:

  • USC Tennis, with 8 hardcourt tennis courts in Watergraafsmeer
  • the AMC Sport Centre next to the AMC 
  • Amstelcampus, a gym on Wibautstraat that forms part of the AUAS Amstel Campus
  • PCH Fitness in the centre of Amsterdam in the P.C. Hoofthuis at the Spuistraat
  • ClubWest, in Amsterdam Nieuw-West
  • USC Body & Mind, a yoga centre around the corner from the Amstel Campus

Many activities, such as swimming, ice skating and outdoor football, take place at other locations. In total, The USC makes use of about 25 sporting facilities in and around Amsterdam.


The USC offers a broad range of sports activities, from aikido and weightlifting, to cycling and lacrosse. To see the full range on offer, see the USC website.

Amsterdam Academic Club

The Amsterdam Academic Club (AAC) functions as the UvA’s 'living room'. Located in the monumental ‘Onder de Klok’ building, the Amsterdam Academic Club houses a bar and a restaurant and is open daily for lunch, dinner and drinks. The AAC brings together the academic world, society and trade and industry, and offers various activities such as live jazz concerts, debates and expositions.

J. Pzn Sweelinck Orchestra

The UvA’s J. Pzn Sweelinck Orchestra was established in 1878, making it Amsterdam’s oldest symphony orchestra. Bringing together around 80 enthusiastic students from all of Amsterdam’s research universities and universities of applied sciences, the orchestra has performed many notable programmes over the years, and regularly performs at top locations in Amsterdam and other Dutch cities.
