The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is consistently ranked among the world’s best universities in global rankings. It is a top 100 university in the THE Rankings, QS Rankings and Leiden Ranking.

QS World University Rankings

Taking 57th place in the 2016-17 QS Rankings, the UvA is the highest ranked Dutch university on the list. The UvA is also ranked among the top-50 universities for Social Sciences & Management (45) and Life Sciences & Medicine (32). 

For a total of 11 subject areas, the UvA is ranked in the top 25 worldwide for the 2015 QS World University Rankings by Subject Area. Communication and Media Studies took 6th place in the global rankings. The UvA also scored highly for Linguistics (19), Psychology (10), Development Studies (25), Sociology (14) and Geography (14).

Times Higher Education World University Rankings

The University of Amsterdam is ranked 63rd in the 2016-17 THE World University Rankings.

The UvA is also included in four of the eight THE top 100 sub-rankings for subject areas: Social Sciences (26), Arts and Humanities (32), Clinical, Pre-Clinical and Health (55) and Life Sciences (68). The UvA is the highest ranked Dutch university in the subject areas Social Sciences and Physical Sciences.

Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking)

In 2015, the UvA was listed in the 101-150 group in the worldwide top 500 ARWU ranking. The UvA is also represented in four of the five field rankings: Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy (38), Social Sciences (37), Natural Sciences and Mathematics (151-200), and Life and Agricultural Sciences (101-150). Additionally, the UvA is  listed in the top 100 of three of subject rankings: Physics, Economics and Computer Science.

Leiden Ranking

The UvA ranked 68th overall in the 2015 Leiden ranking. In the rankings by field, the UvA is ranked in the top 100 in four of the five fields - placing 54 th in the social sciences and humanities, for example.
