PhD positions
The Netherlands is one of the few countries in Europe, and the world, where PhD students are employees of the university. In most countries, they are treated as students, or have to pay for their time as PhD students through a scholarship. There are approximately 2,000 people employed as PhD students at the UvA (including the Amsterdam Medical Center) and around 400 people obtain their PhD every year, two thirds of which are in the science and medical sectors. The UvA has doctoral programmes in all fields of study. Students who have a Master's degree can apply for a PhD position.
