The Department of Communication Science is organized along the lines of socially relevant issues, as reflected in the research and teaching programs. There are currently four program groups (Persuasive Communication, Political Communication and Journalism, Corporate Communication, and Youth and Media Entertainment). In addition the Department has a group of Lecturers and Researchers.
The program group Political Communication & Journalism addresses the information function of communication. The research of the staff focuses on how, and under which conditions, and with what effects news and other communication with informational purposes is produced and disseminated. The program group investigates the content of this information, how audiences use and process it, and what the effects are. A central question is how citizens, organizations, and institutions use media and communication to become informed about public affairs and to participate in them.
Job description
- Teaching regular modules in the curricula of Communication Science at the bachelor and master level. The master program in Political Communication and Journalism and the Research Master program are taught in English;
- supervising and evaluating internships, Bachelor theses and master theses;
- carrying out research within the line ‘media, EU, public opinion and electoral behavior’ within the program group and the ASCoR research program;
- participating in committees, groups and projects in the program group.
Requirements
The candidate we are looking for has:
- a PhD in one of the social sciences, preferably communication science, or at least has extensive knowledge of the discipline;
- extensive knowledge of communication science in general as proven by previous research and academic activities;
- an in-depth knowledge of his/her sub-discipline, proven by publications in prominent international journals and/or through well-known publishers;
- an empirical analytical research profile, preferably with experience in large scale survey data, media content analysis, experimentation, and/ or social media analysis;
- the qualities to apply for competitive research grants;
- teaching experience, preferably BKO (otherwise to be obtained).

Appointment
The assistant professor (UD2 or UD1) is scale 11 or 12, ranging from €3,324 to €5,171 gross per month (full-time). This position is for a fixed term. The committee will make offers pending the vacancy, the financial situation and the experience and track record of the candidates.
