Education and specialization

Jean H.M. Wagemans completed a M.A. in Philosophy and a Ph.D. in Argumentation Theory at the University of Amsterdam. His specialties include dialectic (the theory of argumentation in discussions) and rhetoric (the theory of argumentation in speeches).

Research 

Wagemans is currently involved in a research project on the development of tools for the analysis of philosophical and scientific argumentation. He is also carrying out a pilot for a large-scale research project involving an integration of dialectical and rhetorical taxonomies of arguments. Wagemans is a co-author of Argumentatie en debat (in Dutch) and of the Handbook of Argumentation Theory.

Teaching

Wagemans teaches courses that are part of the master programs Rhetoric, Argumentation Theory, and PhilosophyDiscourse and Argumentation StudiesText and Communication and of the bachelor program Language and Communication, of which he is the Program Director.

Service to the discipline

Wagemans is a member of the Editorial Board of Argumentation and has written reviews for Argumentation, Argumentation and AdvocacyPhilosophy & Rhetoric, and Informal Logic. He is the initiator and manager of the online discussion platform Argumentation Theory for scholars working in the field of logic, dialectic and rhetoric. 

Service to the community

Wagemans has written nearly one hundred columns on dialectic and rhetoric for the Dutch national newspaper Volkskrant.nl and the news site NU.nl. They cover a broad range of subjects, from the reasonableness of arguments put forward by politicians to the general nature and philosophical status of rhetoric. He also contributed to several articles in newspapers and magazines and to a documentary about the Dutch Prime Minister's debate skills that was broadcasted on national television.

Over 900 members share information about upcoming conferences, journal issues, new publications, etc. The forum is initiated and moderated by Jean H.M. Wagemans, assistant professor of argumentation theory at the University of Amsterdam.
