Profile

Iris van Domselaar is co-director of the Amsterdam Center for Legal Professions and researcher/lecturer in Philosophy of Law and Legal Ethics. She studied law and philosophy. From January till April 2007 she was a visiting fellow at the Department of Philosophy of Harvard University. From January 2009 till April 2009 she was a visiting fellow at the Department of Philosophy of Chicago University.

Van Domselaar's research focuses on the question how best to account for moral quality in public institutions. She especially addresses this question regarding the classic legal institutions, like the judiciary and advocacy, but also all other public institutions that are relevant for securing values of political morality and the rule of law. Thereby emphasis is put on the relevance of (professional) virtues. In her thesis ‘The Fragility of Rightness. Adjudication and the primacy of practice’ she has developed an approach to moral quality of adjudication adjudication in which a set of judicial virtues, the concept of civic friendship and that of tragic legal choice play a key role.

Van Domselaar has published in professional and academic journals. She is a frequently asked guest speaker on the topic of judicial virtues, tragic legal choice, professional courage, the relation between ethics and law and Martha Nussbaum's moral and political philosophy.
